International payments

IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a unique identificiation of an account at a financial institution in the EU and other Western countries. IBAN does not replace the original account number, but is a supplement that can be used in international contexts.

As IBAN is monitored for validity by sending and receiving financial institutions, automatic processing of payments across country borders is possible.

All financial institutions in the EU have IBAN. In addition, several countries outside the EU have introduced IBAN, so IBAN can also be used for transfers to i.e. the USA or Japan.

The IBAN number can typically be seen on account statements or you can enquire about it at your financial institution.

IBAN consists of up to 34 symbols and a Danish IBAN could look like this: DK9912344231123456

1-2	Country codee: DK = Danmark / FO = Faroe Islands / GL = Greenland
3-4	IBAN check digits
5-8	Registration number
9-18	Account number
