The number of banks in Denmark is declining.
In 1991 there were 219 financial institutions and in 2023 there were 54.
In the same period, the number of employees in Danish banks has fallen from approximately 51.000 to 36.000. Bank mergers, digitalisation and optimisation have contributed to this development.
In 2023 there were 6 Danish mortgage institutions and approximately 3.500 employees.
