The number of banks in Denmark is declining.
In 1991 there were 219 financial institutions and in 2018 there were 65.
In the same period, the number of employees in Danish banks has fallen from approximately 51,000 to 37,000. Bank mergers, digitalisation and optimisation have contributed to this development.
In 2018 there were 7 Danish mortgage institutions and approximately 3,000 employees.
