Bank packages
To secure the national economy against large negative effects due to the financial crisis, which began in 2008, the Danish parliament adopted measures to protect banks with a range of so-called “bank packages”. Some were provided as guarantees, others as loans or special designs. In the period until 2013, six bank packages were adopted in all.
There is a widespread misunderstanding that bank packages were a gift – they were not. Banks have paid for liquidating all defaulting banks themselves. Banks that have borrowed money from the state have paid the amount back with interest.
